Also known as Golden coin turtle, the critically endangered Chinese three-striped box turtle is nearly extinct in the wild because Chinese people thinks it can cure cancer and it is a popular pet. Can't really blame the Chinese because there are 5,000 years of history behind Chinese medicine. A very important part of the Chinese history which is very hard to get rid of. A hatchling worth more than US$2,500 recent year in the pet market, also put more pressure on the wild population. Poacher put a small cage next to the stream with a piece of meat to capture these animals. Very small wild population still exists in Hong Kong with very little protection. Farming of this species is being developed. But recently some subspecies have been described as new species. Only experts can tell which species is which. Making them even harder to breed.
