Some of the Botanical Wonders of Guyana
By Dmitri Allicock
With over its 80% unspoiled rainforest, Guyana is a hothouse of interest at every turn to botanist. To each region, distinct plant associations are found according to the differences of soil and its formation. From the alluvial flat coastal plains that slowly rises to the rich vegetation covered sand dunes, river valleys, wet savannahs, hills and untouched mountains, the transition from one region to another is for the most part gradual and is never so abrupt that distinct zones of flora are defined. Goats living in a wild herd in the UK have been added to a watchlist of rare breeds.
The Cheviot goat population - estimated at just 450 - centres on a group in the Cheviot Hills in Northumberland.
It is considered an "authentic remnant" of Britain's original primitive goats and has now been added to the Rare Breeds Survival Trust (RBST) watchlist to support its conservation.
Of the estimated 450 Cheviot goats left - including those held by private breeders and for grazing schemes - only 86 females produced offspring in 2023, the RBST said.
Their tenacity allows them to see decades, living an average of 40 to 50 years. This is even true in harsh conditions where these sturdy creatures face intense heat, droughts, and fluctuating food supply. Evolution has gifted them with adaptable digestive systems, letting them make do with dry grass and shrubs during lean times.
Then there are our captive rhinos. Here, they find themselves tucked away from danger, living under the vigilant eyes of caretakers. In zoos and sanctuaries, rhinos live even longer, reaching up to 60 years. Regular meals, clean water, and timely medical intervention are pivotal in extending their lifespan. Yet, while their days may be longer, it's crucial to remember that the safety of captivity can never substitute the vibrancy and diversity of life in the wild.
The Wild Water Buffalo lives in Southeast Asia's wet grasslands and tropical and subtropical forests. It is renowned for its strength, size, and aquatic abilities. Adult males are enormous, weighing approximately 2,645 pounds.
Leung Siu-wah, 68, locally known as "Buffalo Jean" as she has been voluntarily looking after the buffalos for 12 years, wants the government to improve management of construction waste and do more to preserve the wetlands. "They look for food in every nook and cranny," she said.

Monkeys are not the only animals from which the fauna evolved. Life existed even before the appearance of monkeys on earth, and with the evolution of time, various species of animals have evolved through metamorphosis. The biggest difference between monkeys and primitive animals was their tails. Because monkeys had tails than other animals and primitive animals did not have any tails. The primitive animals were larger than monkeys in terms of size and their brains were bigger and bigger in shape.
Barbary macaws are found only in the whole of Europe. Due to the different climate and geographical environment, they look a little different from monkeys in other regions. But in terms of characteristics, they are identical. Surveys have shown that their habitat is in the areas around Morocco and Algeria, and the most visible in this region. However, currently around 200 monkeys have been found around the Straits of Gibraltar. Read more about how this happened with the animal that can copy
