Bongsong · 9 months ago
When visiting Nice; a must-see is the Promenade des Anglais (walkway of the English). Remember to bring your most comfortable walking shoes, as the seven-kilometre promenade is the perfect place for a nice long walk. Its name dates back to the 18th century when English royalty settled there to enjoy the health benefits of the climate.

As the coastline was not easily walkable, a lord insisted on building an accessible promenade over which he, his wife and his friends could stroll. Today, some hotels still bear English names. The Promenade des Anglais is one of Nice's most popular attractions. The avenue is a popular spot for many activities, such as cycling, rollerblading, running and other sports. Not to mention the many events organised there and the hotels, shops and casinos located along the avenue.

Bufflehead (Bucephala albeola)
Information · 7 months ago
This is our smallest and most energetic diving duck with some major flare to boot. The male bufflehead’s oversized head glimmers green and purple iridescent with the appearance of a large pie slice removed, leaving a white patch on the back of its head. The rest of its body is a sleek and stark torpedo of black on white. The female is an unassuming brown and gray duck with a large head and distinctive white cheek patch. Both sexes measure around one foot in length and weigh between one half and just-over one pound.

Buffleheads are impressive divers and use their skills to catch aquatic invertebrates, insects, and mollusks as a main food source. Dives for food typically last between 12 and 25 seconds.

These small ducks choose woodpecker and Northern flicker holes as their nesting cavities, often preferring cavities found in aspen and poplars. Bufflehead are another mostly monogamous species and will stay with their partner for a few years, laying one brood of four to 17 eggs per year. Males will often leave the females during incubation in order to molt, but will return to help protect the ducklings.
Sarcastic fringehead (Neoclinus blanchardi)
Nachima · 8 months ago
Sarcastic fringeheads grow to a maximum of 12 inches but are larger than all other fringeheads. This fish is very aggressive and territorial.

The sarcastic fringehead may get the first part of its name from its amusing fighting style. The sarcastic fringehead will engage in a mouth-off. It will open its alien-like mouth and show its colorful interior and size to its competitor. Two male sarcastic fringeheads might even smack mouths.

Another explanation comes from the Greek word sarkasmós, which means to tear or bite and translates to ‘sarcastic’ in English. The scientist who named it was likely referring to fish’s needle-sharp teeth.
