Wunderpus octopus (Wunderpus photogenicus)
Nachima · 8 months ago
The wunderpus octopus got its name just for being cute. Wunderpus is a mix of the German word “Wunder,” which means marvel or wonder, and the English word "octopus.” The "Photogenicus” in its scientific name likely refers to its photogenic nature.

This type of octopus has rusty brown skin with white blotches and stripes, which form beautiful patterns. It can impressively modulate its shape and color to mimic a lethal lionfish or sea snake to deter a predator. Wunderpuses live in the shallow waters of the Indo-Malayan Archipelago.
Eleven tarantula species are protected under the Endangered Species Act Protection
Ekpolok · 8 months ago
These large hairy spiders are facing threats to their survival, primarily due to habitat destruction. As humans clear forests for various purposes, tarantulas lose their homes and food sources, pushing some species toward extinction.

Additionally, the exotic pet trade poses another danger. The high demand for pet tarantulas leads to their capture from the wild, resulting in declining populations. In response to the declining population, the US Fish and Wildlife Service decided to protect 11 species already considered threatened and endangered.

These species are the following: Poecilotheria formosa, Poecilotheria hanumavilasumica (endangered), Poecilotheria metallica (critically endangered and highly sought after in the global pet trade), Poecilotheria miranda, Poecilotheria rufilata, Poecilotheria striata, Poecilotheria fasciata, Poecilotheria ornate (near threatened), Poecilotheria pederseni, Poecilotheria smithi (vulnerable), and Poecilotheria subfusca (near threatened).

Conservation efforts also focus on captive breeding programs to meet the demand for pet tarantulas without harming wild populations.

Latest Conservation Data Endangered Grévy's zebra, Photo by Bernard DUPONT on Flickr licensed under CC BY-SA 2.0 (Cropped from original)
Dersalon · 8 months ago
IUCN reported Plains Zebras to be near threatened. However, a 2020 study reported that the population had decreased by 25% since 20021.

IUCN categorized Mountain Zebras as Vulnerable3. With over 34,000 mature individuals, its population is rising due to the recovery from a drought in the 80s. However, the threat remains, hence the vulnerable status.

The most unfortunate of the three zebra species is the endangered Grévy's zebra. Its population declined by more than half for the last three decades2. Habitat degradation, competition with livestock, and local hunting are the top threats that led to their status.
Banana plantsBanana plants growing on a plantation. Each herbaceous trunk bears only one bunch of fruit and is cut down after harvest to encourage new growth from the rhizome (underground stem)
Khairool · 8 months ago
The banana plant is a gigantic herb that springs from an underground stem, or rhizome, to form a false trunk 3–6 metres (10–20 feet) high. This trunk is composed of the basal portions of leaf sheaths and is crowned with a rosette of 10 to 20 oblong to elliptic leaves that sometimes attain a length of 3–3.5 metres (10–11.5 feet) and a breadth of 65 cm (26 inches). A large flower spike, carrying numerous yellowish flowers protected by large purple-red bracts, emerges at the top of the false trunk and bends downward to become bunches of 50 to 150 individual fruits, or fingers. The individual fruits, or bananas, are grouped in clusters, or hands, of 10 to 20. After a plant has fruited, it is cut down to the ground, because each trunk produces only one bunch of fruit. The dead trunk is replaced by others in the form of suckers, or shoots, which arise from the rhizome at roughly six-month intervals. The life of a single rhizome thus continues for many years, and the weaker suckers that it sends up through the soil are periodically pruned, while the stronger ones are allowed to grow into fruit-producing plants.
