Did you know that Arctic foxes are ecosystem engineers? A fascinating research project was published in 2016 demonstrating how effective they are at growing gardens around their dens. They may not set out with the intention of having wildflowers and vegetation marking the spot of their homes, but it’s a beautiful development of Nature’s cycle. The tundra maintains minimal and very low-lying vegetation, so you can visibly spot Arctic fox dens by the lushness of the vegetation surrounding them.
The researchers tested the soil throughout the seasons and found that the effects of a fox den increased the nutrients in the soil drastically. In June, extractable phosphorus – a major plant nutrient – was found to be nearly 1200% greater around dens. The natural garden growing is due to the defecation, the remains of foxes’ meals, and urination around the den (Gharajehdaghipour, 2016). The extra fauna helps attract herbivores, like the foxes’ main food source, the lemming.

More elusive in the summer, Arctic foxes come out in their full marshmallow-y glory in the fall. Their grey-brown coats turn a pristine white and they fluff up to the size of a large housecat, with their tail making up one third of their length. Changing colours throughout the year allows them to camouflage themselves, whether predator or prey.
People often wonder how something so small survives the sub-zero temperatures, but Arctic foxes have adapted to their environment surprisingly well. Their small ears, muzzle, and short legs reduce the surface area exposed to the cold. Research has shown it takes temperatures of -70°C or -94°F to even get Arctic foxes to shiver. Now that’s cold! And just in case you’re wondering, polar bears don’t shiver easily either. They normally have a harder time not overheating, thanks to two coats of fur and a thick layer of insulating fat.
Pink River Dolphin (Inia geoffrensis)
All_the_Best · 8 months ago
Another animal on our list of weirdest animals worldwide is the pink river dolphin. Originally born as a gray calf, the river dolphin turns pink as it reaches adulthood. Male river dolphins are usually more pink than their female counterparts. Researchers believe the males have more pink hue because they are aggressive towards themselves.

Unlike other dolphins, the pink river dolphin can turn its head from side to side because of its separated spines. A river dolphin can grow as long as 8.5 ft. Also, it can move one of its flippers independently of the other. It improves the speed of their movement in water.

River dolphins have sensory hair on their snouts. It helps them locate prey in the deep sea. They also have two different types of teeth for various functions. The dolphin's front teeth are pointy and used to catch and hold their prey, while the back teeth are flatter. They use their back teeth to grind their food before swallowing.

Their unique teeth formation allows them to feed on over 50 types of fish, freshwater crabs, and turtles. You can find the pink river dolphin in South America, specifically in the Amazon and Orinoco river systems.
North American River Otter (Lontra canadensis)
All_the_Best · 8 months ago
The North American River Otter can survive in various habitats ranging from the icy rivers of Alaska to the humid marshlands of Florida.

These mustelids have a streamlined body, weighing 25 pounds and standing up to 3.5 feet. They also have a broad, flattened head and thick fur, insulating them against the cold of their watery habitats.

These otters have a varied diet, with fish being their main staple. In addition to fish, they also eat amphibians, crustaceans, small mammals, and birds.

Interestingly, North American River Otters perform a poop dance and use designated "latrine sites" for their waste deposits.

The Southern River Otter inhabits the rivers, lakes, and coastal marine habitats in Chile and Argentina. They have an elongated body reaching up to 3.8 feet and 22 pounds.

Their diet is varied, from fish to crustaceans and mollusks. However, they also prey on small birds and mammals when the opportunity arises.
Neotropical River Otter (Lontra longicaudis)
All_the_Best · 8 months ago
The Neotropical River Otter lives in the freshwater bodies and coastal areas of Central and South America. It has a sleek, elongated body and dense fur ranging from brown to grayish-brown. Moreover, it has a long tail and white or cream-colored underbelly and throat.

It feeds on fish, crustaceans, small mammals, birds, insects, and reptiles. Furthermore, local fishermen confirmed these animals attack their fishing nets on rocky coasts to eat the remaining stuck fish2, which affects their productivity.
Cross River Gorilla (Gorilla gorilla diehli)
Ekpolok · 8 months ago
Cross River Gorillas live in the border zone between Nigeria and Cameroon. The habitat is broadleaf forests with altitudes ranging from 328 feet to 6,683 feet.

In physical attributes, it bears shorter skulls, smaller cranial vaults, and smaller palates than the previous type of gorilla subspecies. However, size and limb length match closely. One distinctive aspect of Cross River gorillas is their shorter hands and larger opposability index.

In general, wild gorillas are not dangerous. However, they can show aggression when disturbed. Behavioral differences emerged in a three-year study at Kagwene Mountain, Cameroon. The Cross River gorillas threw fistfuls of grass3, branches, and stones. Researchers concluded this action is a learned response to local conditions.

The nesting habits of Cross River gorillas also differ by environmental conditions. During the dry period, most nests are found on the ground, but in the wet season, they opt for tree-high nests to shield them from the rain.

They also make more day nests during the rainy season and reuse old nesting sites around 35% of the time. These patterns highlight the adaptive and intelligent characteristics of this incredible gorilla subspecies.

A detailed depiction of genuine nature scenery. Picture a tranquil forest with trees of varying heights, their leaves displaying a beautiful array of greens. There are numerous ferns and flowering plants at the base of these trees, painting a vibrant picture. In the distance, a calm river flows, reflecting the rays of the setting sun. A variety of birds appear, returning to their nests for the night. This could also include a stunning mountain range with a clear blue sky overhead, with clouds softly lingering around the peaks. The scene conveys the earth's unadulterated beauty
Vibrant Landscape: Forest, Mountains, River, Lake & Flowers
Laltila · 9 months ago
A vast and diverse landscape: one area is covered by a lush green forest, with foliage reflecting the brilliant colors of the sunset. Adjacent, a rocky mountain range shoots up into vividly blue skies, their snowy peaks glistening under the bright sun. A fast-flowing river carves its path through the valley, leading to a serene, cyan-colored lake surrounded by a few cottages. Nearby, a vast open field of marigold flowers sways gently in the wind. Birds and butterflies add a touch of life, fluttering around in this vibrant panorama.
