The banana plant is a gigantic herb that springs from an underground stem, or rhizome, to form a false trunk 3–6 metres (10–20 feet) high. This trunk is composed of the basal portions of leaf sheaths and is crowned with a rosette of 10 to 20 oblong to elliptic leaves that sometimes attain a length of 3–3.5 metres (10–11.5 feet) and a breadth of 65 cm (26 inches). A large flower spike, carrying numerous yellowish flowers protected by large purple-red bracts, emerges at the top of the false trunk and bends downward to become bunches of 50 to 150 individual fruits, or fingers. The individual fruits, or bananas, are grouped in clusters, or hands, of 10 to 20. After a plant has fruited, it is cut down to the ground, because each trunk produces only one bunch of fruit. The dead trunk is replaced by others in the form of suckers, or shoots, which arise from the rhizome at roughly six-month intervals. The life of a single rhizome thus continues for many years, and the weaker suckers that it sends up through the soil are periodically pruned, while the stronger ones are allowed to grow into fruit-producing plants.

In the earlier days, diabetes was more commonly restricted to the older population above the age of 40 years. The overall prevalence of type 1 diabetes (the type that can affect younger people) was also low in the earlier days, however, the increasing incidents of diabetes in today’s times have set an alarm for caution for everyone. Many people are affected by diabetes and it is causing severe distress to the mental and physical health aspects. It is a condition that requires a lot of energy to be able to deal with since it plays a role and affects several different parts of one’s life. Along with requiring a lot of energy, it also drains an equal amount of energy.
To be able to effectively take care of and manage the symptoms of diabetes, it would primarily be important to better the food-related aspects. Since diabetes is all about keeping the blood sugar levels under control, the major source of having poor sugar levels is the intake of improper food items. If a person with diabetes can exercise control over unhealthy eating habits, a major portion of the regulation of blood sugars would already be taken care of.
This is why when dealing with diabetes, an individual has to take into account multiple specialists to take guidance from, one of the important ones being a dietician. This piece was inspired by Charleston's symbolic iconography, the most famous symbol being the pineapple. I have been visiting Charleston since I was little, and every time I have been, I loved looking at all of the pineapple sculptures, paintings, and images. At the time I was 15 and just bought my first Prismacolor colored pencils. I saw other artists creating hyper realistic images of food and other objects. I was intrigued to try to make something realistic myself, so I choose none other than what I looked forward to seeing when I went to Charleston. When I realized every spike on the pineapple was taking hours at a time, I gradually fell back and stopped working on it. It was not until I decided to enter it into the Celebrating Arts competition to finish what I had started two years ago.
