With time, Lakhi’s age caught up with her, and she showed signs of slowing down, old injuries got inflamed and she seemed to prefer resting against the mud beds in her enclosure. Late Saturday evening on the 3rd of March, she seemed more weary than usual, and even as her knees buckled under her, Asha and Coco rushed to her side to support her. Asha appeared calm and strong, as if she knew in her own way that this was it – Coco panicked initially, rushing about and running circles around her fallen friend. The team rushed in, the crane was called in to lift her back to her feet and support her – the elephants moved aside and watched, Asha touching them gently as they huddled together. They stood back as the team tried to get her back to her feet, even the younger elephants seemed uncharacteristically calm. Maybe they knew, maybe they realised it was time to let go and had their chance to say their goodbyes, and wanted to let her pass in peace. Lakhi resisted being lifted, as if she too knew her time had come. She let out her final breath and slumped down against the mud bed, eyes shut looking like she was completely at peace. As the team moved away, heartbroken, Asha rumbled loudly from where she was standing, but none of the elephants moved – Coco let out a small wail, and from every enclosure elephants responded softly with rumbles, trumpets and huffs all the way from the bulls to the closerby females like Phoolkali like an orchestra of calm, reassuring solidarity for their fallen friend.

পরিযায়ী ভূচর পাখি। শালিক আকৃতিক গড়ন। চেহারা সাদা-কালো হলেও দেখতে মন্দ নয়। প্রাকৃতিক আবাস্থল ওক প্রজাতির গাছ অথবা সুঁচালো চিরহরিৎ বন। বিচরণ রয়েছে পাথুরে এলাকায়ও। দেশে যত্রতত্র দেখা যায় না। পরিত্যক্ত বা স্যাঁতসেঁতে এলাকার লতাপাতা উল্টিয়ে খাবার খোঁজে। বেশিরভাগই একাকী বিচরণ করে। পুরুষ পাখির তুলনায় স্ত্রী পাখি নিষ্প্রভ। ভিন্ন প্রজাতির মনে হতে পারে। স্ত্রী পাখি দেখতে কিছুটা কাঠশালিকের মতো। বৈশ্বিক বিস্তৃতি বাংলাদেশ, ভারত, নেপাল, মিয়ানমার, লাওস, তিব্বত, ভিয়েতনাম ও থাইল্যান্ড পর্যন্ত। প্রজাতিটি বিশ্বব্যাপী হুমকি নয়, ন্যূনতম বিপদগ্রস্ত হিসেবে চিহ্নিত হয়েছে।
পাখির বাংলা নাম: ‘ধূসর ডানা কালো দামা’, ইংরেজি নাম: ‘গ্রে-উইংগড ব্ল্যাকবার্ড’ (Grey-winged Blackbird), বৈজ্ঞানিক নাম: Turdus boulboul। এরা ‘ধলাপাখ কালিদামা’ নামেও পরিচিত।
প্রজাতি দৈর্ঘ্যে ২৭-২৯ সেন্টিমিটার লম্বা। ওজন ৮৫ থেকে ১০৫ গ্রাম। স্ত্রী-পুরুষ পাখির চেহারায় পার্থক্য রয়েছে। পুরুষ পাখির মাথা, ঘাড়, পিঠ ও লেজ আঁশটে কুচকুচে কালো। ডানার প্রান্ত পালক কালো মধ্যখানে ধূসর সাদা। দেহতল কালো হলেও পেটের দুপাশে সাদা ছিট দেখা যায়। চোখের বলয় হলদেটে। ঠোঁট ও পা কমলা-হলুদ। অপরদিকে স্ত্রী পাখির মাথা ও পিঠ ধূসর বাদামি। চোখের বলয় কালচে। ঠোঁট ও পা পুরুষ পাখিদের মতো উজ্জ্বল হলুদ নয়।
প্রধান খাবার: শুককীট, শুঁয়োপোকা, কেঁচো, পোকামাকড় ছোট ফল ইত্যাদি।
প্রজনন মৌসুম এপ্রিল থেকে জুলাই। অঞ্চলভেদে প্রজনন মৌসুমের হেরফের রয়েছে। বাসা বাঁধে ভূমি থেকে ১-৩ মিটার উঁচুতে। কাপ আকৃতির বাসা। উপকরণ হিসেবে ব্যবহার করে শৈবাল, শুকনো ঘাস ও লতাপাতা। ডিম পাড়ে ৩-৪টি। ডিম ফুটতে সময় ১৪-১৫ দিন।

The species is 25-20 cm long in length. Weight 5 to 5 grams. There are differences in the appearance of females and males. The head, neck, back and tail of the male bird are crisp black. The feathers of the wings are grayish white in the middle of the black. Although the body is black, white spots are seen on both sides of the abdomen. The eye ball is in yellow. The lips and legs are orange-yellow. On the other hand, the head and back of the female bird are grayish brown. Eye color is black. The lips and legs are not as bright yellow as the male birds.

The breeding season is April to July. Regions vary in breeding season. The nest is 3-4 meters high from the ground. Cup shaped nest As a material, algae, dried grass and shrubs are used. Eggs laying 3-5. Egg burst time 3-5 days.
