ঢাকায় গণপরিবহনের যাত্রা শুরু মুড়ির টিন নামক বাস দিয়ে। মুড়ির টিন বাসের গল্প বা ইতিহাস হলো- ১৯৩৯ সাল থেকে ১৯৪৫ সাল পর্যন্ত ছয় বছর ধরে চলা দ্বিতীয় বিশ্বযুদ্ধ যখন শেষ হয়, তখন এতদঅঞ্চলে মিত্রবাহিনীর ব্যবহৃত কিছু যানবাহন এদেশের কিছু বিত্তশালীর কাছে নিলামে বিক্রি করে দেয়। সেসব যানবাহনের মধ্যে ছিলো- মালামাল পরিবহনের ট্রাক, জীপ গাড়ি, কাসিম বা কচ্ছপ আকৃতির টেক্সিসহ আরও অন্যান্য তাদের কিছু ব্যবহারিক ভাঙাচোরা গাড়ি। এসব ভাঙাচোরা গাড়ি তখনকার সময়ের  বিত্তশালীরা ইংরেজদের কাছ থেকে কম দামে কিনে রাখে। ট্রাকগুলোর কাঠের বডিতে বাসের আদল দিয়ে তৈরি হয়  নাকবোঁচা বাস। বাইরের দিকে কাঠের বডির ওপর মুড়ে  দেওয়া হয় টিন। সেই থেকেই বাসটির নাম হয় মুড়ির টিন।  আবার অনেকের মতে, মুড়ির মতো ভরাট হয়ে অধিক যাত্রী!!!
