JAMMU: Army has no data to suggest that surgical strikes were conducted by its troops across the Line of Control (LoC) before September 29, 2016, the day when such strikes were carried out in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK).
This was stated by the Directorate General of Military Operations (DGMOs) in a RTI reply, putting to rest the claim of UPA and Congress that six surgical strikes were conducted during the period of Manmohan Singh government.
"This section does not hold any data pertaining to surgical strikes if carried out before September 29, 2016," said Lt Col A D S Jasrotia at the Integrated Headquarters of MoD (Army).
The reply came in response to an RTI filed by Jammu-based activist Rohit Choudhary about the number of surgical strikes on Pakistan between 2004 and 2014, and after September 2014. He had also sought to know how many of those were successful.
"Indian army conducted surgical strikes along the LOC on 29 September 2016. No Indian soldier lost his life during surgical strikes", the officer of IHQ of Army's Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) said in the RTI reply.
Some Congress leaders including from former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh claimed that several surgical strikes were conducted by army during the previous UPA rule.
"Multiple surgical strikes took place during our tenure, too. For us, military operations were meant for strategic deterrence and giving a befitting reply to anti-India forces than to be used for vote garnering exercises", Singh had said in an interview to a newspaper. Congress leader Rajiv Shukla had told reporters at an AICC briefing last week that six surgical strikes were conducted during the period of Manmohan Singh government.
The BJP had questioned the claims and said the Congress had a habit of lying.
Union Minister V K Singh, a former army chief, on Saturday denied knowledge of a surgical strike during his tenure and accused the Congress of lying about it.
Taking to Twitter, he said, "Congress has a habit of lying. Will you please let me know which 'So-called Surgical Strike' are you attributing to my tenure as COAS (chief of army staff). Am sure you must have hired some Coupta to invent another story."

রাজধানী ঢাকা বলতে নাগরিকরা বোঝেন ইটপাথরের এক শহর। এখানে সতেজ নিঃশ্বাস নেওয়া যেন বিরল ঘটনা। তবুও আশা ছাড়েন না কেউ কেউ। সবুজ প্রকৃতি চেখে দেখতে বাসার ছাদে গড়ে তোলে বাগান। কী নেই সেই বাগানে– আম, সফেদা, জামরুল, কলা, পেঁপে, ড্রাগনসহ বিভিন্ন প্রজাতির ফলের গাছ; রয়েছে বাগানবিলাস, গোলাপ, কাঠগোলাপ, জবা, অলকানন্দা, নয়নতারাসহ নানা রকমের ফুল। তাছাড়া শাকসবজি তো আছেই। বাগানের পরিচর্যা নিজেই করে থাকেন প্রকৃতিপ্রেমীরা।
এই প্রকৃতিপ্রেমীদের একজন আফতাবনগরের ‘ডি’ ব্লকের বাসিন্দা রুমেলা হক। এক যুগ ধরে তিনি নিজ হাতে তৈরি করেছেন ছাদবাগান। রুমেলা বলেন, ‘বিকেল বা সন্ধ্যায় ছাদে উঠলে সারাদিনের ক্লান্তি ভুলে যাই। সামান্য ফুল-ফল-সবজির মাধ্যমে লাভবান হচ্ছি, তার চেয়েও বড় কথা পরিবেশের ভারসাম্য রক্ষায় যুক্ত হতে পেরে ভালো লাগছে। আমার চারতলা বাড়ির ছাদের নিচের ফ্ল্যাটের তাপ গরমের দিনে সহনীয় থাকে। কারণ ছাদজুড়ে রয়েছে গাছপালা। ছাদবাগান নীরবে নগরবাসীর উপকার করছে। সবাই যদি নিজ নিজ জায়গা থেকে গাছ রোপণ করে, তাহলে একদিন এই নগরীতে সবুজের ঘাটতি অনেকটাই পূরণ হবে।’
রাজধানীর ছাদে বাগান করার বিষয়টি ব্যক্তিগত শখের চিন্তা থেকে শুরু হলেও এখন তা পরিবেশ রক্ষার দিকে ঝুঁকেছে। এটি এখন গুরুত্বপূর্ণ দায়িত্ব মনে করছেন অনেকেই। কারণ তথ্য বলছে, প্রায় তিন দশকে রাজধানীতে গাছের হার ২০ থেকে প্রায় ৮ শতাংশ এলাকায় এসে ঠেকেছে। এতে প্রতি বছরে বাড়ছে তাপমাত্রা। এই পরিস্থিতিতে ছাদবাগান পরিবেশ রক্ষায় অন্যতম ভরসা উঠতে পারে।
ছাদবাগানের কথা উঠলে ঢাকা উত্তর সিটি করপোরেশনের (ডিএনসিসি) প্রয়াত মেয়র আনিসুল হকের কথা চলে আসে। ২০১৫ সালে তিনি ঘোষণা দেন, ছাদবাগান করলে হোল্ডিং ট্যাক্সে ছাড় দেওয়া হবে। এ উদ্যোগের মাধ্যমে ডিএনসিসি এলাকায় ছাদবাগানকারীরা হোল্ডিং ট্যাক্সে ১০ শতাংশ মওকুফের সুবিধা পেতে শুরু করেন, যা এখনও বিদ্যমান। তবে বিষয়টি অনেকে জানেন না।
ধানমন্ডি, মহানগর প্রজেক্ট, আফতাবনগর, মিরপুর, মগবাজারসহ বিভিন্ন এলাকা ঘুরে অনেক ছাদে বাগান দেখা গেছে। এসব এলাকায় নতুন ফ্ল্যাটে ছাদবাগান করা হচ্ছে। পাশাপাশি পুরোনো বাসার ছাদেও গাছ লাগাচ্ছেন অনেকে; যদিও এতে ঝুঁকি আছে।
ঢাকায় বিশেষভাবে ছাদে লাগানোর জন্য উপযোগী গাছ, বীজ, মাটির চাহিদা গত ১০ বছরে অনেক বেশি বেড়েছে বলে জানান চারা ও বীজ বিক্রেতা শামসুল হোসেন। তিনি বলেন, ‘ঢাকায় গরম যেমন বাড়ছে, তার লগে বাড়ছে গাছ কিইন্না ছাদে লাগানোর চাহিদা।’
গ্রিন সেভার্স নামে একটি অনলাইনভিত্তিক প্রতিষ্ঠানের মাধ্যমে গাছের পরিচর্যা ও চিকিৎসা দিয়ে আসছেন আহসান রনি। তিনি মনে করেন, বাংলাদেশে ছাদবাগান হচ্ছে, কিন্তু অনেক ক্ষেত্রেই পরিকল্পনাটা সঠিকভাবে হচ্ছে না।
রনি বলেন, ‘কোন গাছ রোপণ করা দরকার, পরিচর্যা কেমন হবে, কতটুকু দূরত্বে রোপণ করা হবে ইত্যাদি বিষয় খেয়াল রেখে আধুনিক ছাদবাগান করা উচিত।’
বিভিন্ন মাধ্যমের তথ্য অনুযায়ী, ঢাকা শহরে গত পাঁচ বছরে গড় তাপমাত্রা ধারাবাহিকভাবে বেড়েছে। ২০২৪ সালে বেশ কয়েকবার ৪০ ডিগ্রি সেলসিয়াস ছাড়িয়ে গেছে তাপমাত্রা, যা ১৯৬৫ সালের পর সর্বোচ্চ হিসেবে রেকর্ড করা হয়। এর অন্যতম প্রধান কারণ গাছপালার অভাব। রাজধানীতে গাছ বা সবুজ এলাকা শহরের আয়তনের ৮ শতাংশের কম। আদর্শ শহরে ২০ থেকে ২৫ শতাংশ থাকা প্রয়োজন।
গবেষণার মাধ্যমে পাওয়া তথ্য তুলে ধরে স্ট্যামফোর্ড বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের পরিবেশবিজ্ঞান বিভাগের প্রধান অধ্যাপক আহমদ কামরুজ্জামান মজুমদার বলেন, ঢাকা শহরে প্রায় ৫০ লাখ পরিবারের বাস। এসব পরিবার মোটামুটি পাঁচ লাখ ভবনে বসবাস করে। যদি গড়ে হিসাব করা হয়, পাঁচ লাখ ভবনের ৬০ শতাংশ ছাদে বাগান করার উপযোগিতা আছে। সেক্ষেত্রে তিন লাখ ছাদ পাওয়া যায়, যেগুলোতে বাগান করা যায়। বর্তমানে রাজধানীতে যত ছাদ আছে, এর মধ্যে বাগান রয়েছে প্রায় পাঁচ শতাংশে।
আমরা একটি গবেষণায় দেখেছি, সবুজের উপস্থিতি যেখানে বেশি, সেখানে তাপমাত্রা ২ থেকে ৪ ডিগ্রি কম।
চ্যালেঞ্জের কথা উল্লেখ করে এই পরিবেশবিদ বলেন, ছাদবাগানের ক্ষেত্রে আমাদের দেশীয় প্রজাতিকে বেছে নেওয়া দরকার। দেশীয় ফল-ফুল গাছের প্রতি গুরুত্ব দিতে হবে। তা না হলে পরিবেশের ভারসাম্য রক্ষায় এ বাগানের তেমন ভূমিকা থাকবে না।
নাটোরের নলডাঙ্গায় স্টেশনে পানি নিতে নেমে ট্রেনের ধাক্কায় মুক্তার হোসেন (২৭) নামের এক যুবকের মৃত্যু হয়েছে। শুক্রবার (২৯ নভেম্বর) বিকেল চারটার দিকে উপজেলার মাধনগর রেলওয়ে স্টেশনে এই দুর্ঘটনা ঘটে।

মাধনগর রেলওয়ে স্টেশন মাস্টার মো. মোমিন উদ্দিন নিহতের সত্যতা নিশ্চিত করেছেন।
প্রত্যক্ষদর্শীরা জানান, বিকেলে মুক্তার হোসেন দিনাজপুর থেকে বাংলাবান্ধা ট্রেনে করে রাজশাহী যাচ্ছিলেন। ট্রেনটি মাধনগরে ষ্টেশনে বিরতি দিলে পানি নেওযার জন্য মুক্তার হোসেন নামলে ঢাকা থেকে দিনাজপুরগামী একতা ট্রেনের সঙ্গে ধাক্কা লাগে। এতে গুরুতর আহত হন মুক্তার হোসেন। আহত অবস্থায় এলাকাবাসী মুক্তারকে উদ্ধার করে নাটোর আধুনিক সদর হাসপাতালে ভর্তি করে। সেখানে কর্তব্যরত চিকিৎসক তাকে মৃত ঘোষণা করেন।
বঙ্গোপসাগরে অবস্থানরত গভীর নিম্নচাপটি ঘণীভূত হয়ে ঘূর্ণিঝড় ‘ফিনজাল’ এ পরিণত হয়েছে। এর ফলে দেশের তিন বিভাগে সন্ধ্যার মধ্যে বৃষ্টি হওয়ার পূর্বাভাস দিয়েছে আবহাওয়া অধিদপ্তর। এছাড়া দেশের অন্যান্য জায়গায় অস্থায়ীভাবে আকাশ আংশিক মেঘলা থাকতে পারে বলে সরকারি সংস্থাটির পূর্বাভাসে বলা হয়েছে।
শুক্রবার সন্ধ্যা ৬টা আগামী ২৪ ঘণ্টার আবহাওয়ার পূর্বভাসে এসব কথা বলা হয়েছে।
আবহাওয়া অফিস জানিয়েছে, দক্ষিণপশ্চিম বঙ্গোপসাগর ও এর কাছাকাছি এলাকায় অবস্থান করা গভীর নিম্নচাপটি উত্তরপশ্চিম দিকে অগ্রসর ও ঘনীভূত হয়ে ঘূর্ণিঝড় ফিনজালে পরিণত হয়েছে। এটি আরও উত্তরপশ্চিম দিকে অগ্রসর হয়ে শনিবার দুপুরের দিকে উত্তর তামিলনাড়ু উপকূল অতিক্রম করতে পারে। এর বাড়তি অংশ উত্তর বঙ্গোপসাগর পর্যন্ত বিস্তৃত রয়েছে। সমুদ্রবন্দরগুলোকে দুই নম্বর সতর্ক সংকেত দেখিয়ে যেতে বলা হয়েছে।
এমন অবস্থায় সন্ধ্যা ৬টা পর্যন্ত খুলনা, বরিশাল ও চট্টগ্রাম বিভাগের দুয়েক জায়গায় হালকা থেকে মাঝারি ধরনের বৃষ্টি হতে পারে। এ ছাড়া সন্ধ্যা ৬টা থেকে পরবর্তী ২৪ ঘণ্টাও খুলনা ও বরিশাল বিভাগে বৃষ্টির প্রবণতা রয়েছে।
তাপমাত্রা নিয়ে পূর্বাভাসে বলা হয়েছে, আজ সারা দেশে দিনের তাপমাত্রা কমতে পারে ১ থেকে ২ ডিগ্রি সেলসিয়াস এবং রাতের তাপমাত্রা প্রায় অপরিবর্তিত থাকতে পারে।
ঘূর্ণিঝড় কেন্দ্রের ৫৪ কিলোমিটারের মধ্যে বাতাসের একটানা সর্বোচ্চ গতিবেগ ঘণ্টায় ৬২ কিলোমিটার। যা দমকা অথবা ঝোড়ো হাওয়ার আকারে ঘণ্টায় ৮৮ কিলোমিটার পর্যন্ত বৃদ্ধি পাচ্ছে। ঘূর্ণিঝড় কেন্দ্রের নিকটবর্তী এলাকায় সাগর খুবই উত্তাল রয়েছে।
যুক্তরাজ্য সফরের উদ্দেশে দেশ ছেড়েছেন বিএনপি মহাসচিব মির্জা ফখরুল ইসলাম আলমগীর। শনিবার সকাল ৮টা ২০ মিনিটের দিকে বাংলাদেশ বিমানের একটি ফ্লাইটে সস্ত্রীক ঢাকা ত্যাগ করেন তিনি। এর আগে, ৭টা ১৭ মিনিটে বিমানবন্দরে পৌঁছান মির্জা ফখরুল।

জানা গেছে, মহাসচিবের এই সফরের পরই চিকিৎসার জন্য যুক্তরাজ্যে যাবেন বিএনপি চেয়ারপারসন বেগম খালেদা জিয়া। খালেদা জিয়া প্রথমে যুক্তরাজ্যে চিকিৎসা করাবেন। পরে সেখান থেকে চিকিৎসার জন্য তিনি যুক্তরাষ্ট্রেও যেতে পারেন।
রাষ্ট্রদ্রোহ মামলায় গ্রেপ্তার হওয়া চিন্ময় কৃষ্ণ দাস ব্রহ্মচারীকে আদালতে নেওয়ার সময় পুলিশের কাজে বাধা সৃষ্টির দায়ে দুই ব্যক্তিকে গ্রেপ্তার করেছে পুলিশ।
শুক্রবার (২৯ নভেম্বর) সকালে নগরের বাকলিয়া এলাকা থেকে তাদের গ্রেপ্তার করে বাকলিয়া থানা পুলিশ। গ্রেপ্তাররা হলেন- মৃত সুনিল ধরের ছেলে বাবলা ধর (৪২) এবং দুলাল শীলের ছেলে সজল শীল (৪০)।
বাকলিয়া থানার ভারপ্রাপ্ত (ওসি) মো. ইখতিয়ার উদ্দিন বিষয়টি নিশ্চিত করে বলেন, ‘রাষ্ট্রদ্রোহ মামলায় ২৬ নভেম্বর চিন্ময় কৃষ্ণ দাস ব্রহ্মচারীকে আদালতে নেওয়ার হচ্ছিল। এ সময় সময় একদর লোক পুলিশের কাজে বাধা সৃষ্টি করে। এই ঘটনায় জড়িত থকার অভিযোগে দুইজনকে গ্রেপ্তার করা হয়েছে। তাদের বিরুদ্ধে আইনানুনগ ব্যবস্থা নেওয়া হয়েছে।’
As omnivores, foxes in the Artic eat voles, mice, lemmings, rabbits and other small animals throughout the fall and winter. In the spring, they supplement their diet with nesting birds, and are often seen sneaking around the tundra attempting to steal Canada goose eggs. In summer, they add in insects and berries to their menu. They’ve also been known to catch young lake trout by jumping from the bank into a school of fish in shallow water. In short, they’re opportunists.
Foxes will also eat seal pups, beaver, reptiles, fruits and even garbage. (Hinterland Who’s Who, n.d.). Red foxes stock up, hiding their food in the dirt or snow and marking it with urine. I, for one, am glad we have a freezer and pantry instead.
Did you know that Arctic foxes are ecosystem engineers? A fascinating research project was published in 2016 demonstrating how effective they are at growing gardens around their dens. They may not set out with the intention of having wildflowers and vegetation marking the spot of their homes, but it’s a beautiful development of Nature’s cycle. The tundra maintains minimal and very low-lying vegetation, so you can visibly spot Arctic fox dens by the lushness of the vegetation surrounding them.
The researchers tested the soil throughout the seasons and found that the effects of a fox den increased the nutrients in the soil drastically. In June, extractable phosphorus – a major plant nutrient – was found to be nearly 1200% greater around dens. The natural garden growing is due to the defecation, the remains of foxes’ meals, and urination around the den (Gharajehdaghipour, 2016). The extra fauna helps attract herbivores, like the foxes’ main food source, the lemming.
Cute and frisky, Arctic foxes are nomadic animals that follow polar bears onto the ice in search of food throughout the winter. During the summer they form family groups. The mother and father both care for the young and sometimes a female kit from a previous litter joins in to help care for the new pups. In the wild, Arctic foxes only live for 3-4 years, as there are many predators to evade, including eagles, polar bears, wolverines, red foxes and wolves.
If you’ve seen the classic photo of an Arctic fox nosediving into the snow, they aren’t playing, they’re hunting. Their hearing is so good they can hear lemmings moving underneath the snow. They pounce when they get close.
More elusive in the summer, Arctic foxes come out in their full marshmallow-y glory in the fall. Their grey-brown coats turn a pristine white and they fluff up to the size of a large housecat, with their tail making up one third of their length. Changing colours throughout the year allows them to camouflage themselves, whether predator or prey.
People often wonder how something so small survives the sub-zero temperatures, but Arctic foxes have adapted to their environment surprisingly well. Their small ears, muzzle, and short legs reduce the surface area exposed to the cold. Research has shown it takes temperatures of -70°C or -94°F to even get Arctic foxes to shiver. Now that’s cold! And just in case you’re wondering, polar bears don’t shiver easily either. They normally have a harder time not overheating, thanks to two coats of fur and a thick layer of insulating fat.
The wunderpus octopus got its name just for being cute. Wunderpus is a mix of the German word “Wunder,” which means marvel or wonder, and the English word "octopus.” The "Photogenicus” in its scientific name likely refers to its photogenic nature.
This type of octopus has rusty brown skin with white blotches and stripes, which form beautiful patterns. It can impressively modulate its shape and color to mimic a lethal lionfish or sea snake to deter a predator. Wunderpuses live in the shallow waters of the Indo-Malayan Archipelago.
Wetlands are areas that are totally or partially covered with water. They are transitional between permanently flooded deep water areas and areas with their water tables near the surface. Sometimes, shallow water covers the surface of the land. Examples of wetlands are:

fresh marshes,
salt marshes,
swamps,
wet prairies,
bogs,
forested wetlands,
and vernal pools.
You can also refer to wetlands as areas with dominant natural water saturation levels, determining the soil development processes and the plants and animals inhabiting them. The covering of water in some wetlands could be permanent or seasonal.
