They are large semi-aquatic mammals. They have a large barrel-shaped body with a short tail and legs. Note that their heads are huge. Their bodies are gray or mottled brown in color. Although later their skin color becomes pale and discolored.
Largeleaf phlox (Phlox amplifolia) is a sun-tolerant plant that's resistant to powdery mildew, a fungal disease that affects many flowers. The native plant produces underground runners that slowly spread to form a large mass. "Blooming in early summer, the airy pink inflorescences are held 1 to 2 feet above the mass of foliage and continue to bloom for about six weeks," says Leirion Sorensen, the gardens manager at Mt. Species from top to bottom: South Island Giant Moa (Dinornis Robustus), Eastern Moa (Emeus Crassus), & The Little Bush Moa (Anomalopteryx Didiformis).
All three along with 6 other Moa species were driven to extinction by hunting and habitat destruction about 600 years ago.
