Garden Snail (Cornu aspersum)

Garden Snail (Cornu aspersum)
Ebook · 8 months ago
The garden snail is a widely known plant feeder, causing significant damage to crops and ornamentals. Introduced to California in the 1850s for its culinary value, it has since thrived and become a challenging pest.

With a thin, large shell sporting yellow or brown hues accented by fine wrinkles, it adds a distinctive touch to our gardens. Color variations are common, resulting in a visually diverse population with four to five whorls featured on adult shells.

Originating from the Mediterranean, its territorial expanse now includes northwest Africa, Iberia, Asia Minor, Egypt, and even Britain. Courtesy of human influence, it's found globally in places with temperate climates.

Primarily herbivorous, the garden snail isn't a picky eater. It feasts on various plants, from fruit trees and vegetables to rose bushes and garden flowers. It also scavenges on decaying plant matter and crushed fellow snails.

Most importantly, this mollusk forms a vital part of the food chain, eaten by various creatures. Many birds and small mammals benefit from this unassuming trespasser's presence.

Sanctuary Asia at the Oklahoma City Zoo is a state-of-the-art multi-acre space for the zoo’s herd of Asian elephants. This special area includes three large outdoor yards, a waterfall, pools, and shade structures. The barn also has a boardwalk for viewing the elephants inside. The zoo’s multigenerational Asian female elephant herd also recently gained a new nine-year-old male elephant named Bowie.

Located in the Adventure District of northeast Oklahoma City, the Oklahoma City Zoo comprises 130 acres with more than 1,900 animals. The Great EscApe is home to two gorilla troops, as well as chimpanzees and orangutans, while the Cat Forest includes tigers and African lions. At Aquaticus you’ll find California sea lions, and kids can play and explore at the Children’s Zoo. Oklahoma Trails is a unique exhibit with animals native to the state, like alligators, black bears, bison, and a walk-in bird exhibit.

Best times to visit the Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Garden:

Spring is a great time to visit the Oklahoma City Zoo. The mild temperatures make it easier to see animals since they are more active during this time.
Summer is usually very hot, so it’s best to come early in the morning when it’s cooler. When temperatures rise later in the day, the animals will probably be resting in the shade.
Winter months are still enjoyable, although some of the exhibits are not open due to the weather.
Types of Marigolds for Gardens
Nachima · 7 months ago
Marigolds are commonly divided into three categories: African, French, and signet. All these marigolds are fast-growing annual plants that bloom reliably from early summer to frost. Deadheading will encourage more blooms and prevent marigold volunteers from popping up next spring. However, each type has its unique characteristics.
Garden tiger moth
Tumake_Chai · 8 months ago
The garden tiger moth or great tiger moth[2] (Arctia caja) is a moth of the family Erebidae. Arctia caja is a northern species found in the US, Canada, and Europe.[3][4] The moth prefers cold climates with temperate seasonality, as the larvae overwinter,[3] and preferentially chooses host plants that produce pyrrolizidine alkaloids.[5][6][3] However, garden tiger moths are generalists, and will pick many different plants to use as larval host plants.[5][4][3]

Black Garden Ant (Lasius niger)
Ekpolok · 8 months ago
Fun Fact: Black garden ants build intricate underground tunnels and chambers extending several meters. Their tunnels house their colonies, store food, and protect them from predators.

The black garden ant commonly lives in European grasslands. These black ants have glossy ebony bodies that span only 3 to 5 millimeters, blending well with the undergrowth. Despite their size, their colonies can house 15,000 individuals, each with a role in their complex societal structure.

Regarding their diet, you'll find these ants foraging for fruit, other insects, and nectar. However, they have formed a unique relationship with aphids, "farming" them for their sweet honeydew secretions, similar to how humans rear cattle. This practice helps regulate aphid populations (similar to the ladybug who loves aphids, too).

Their worker ants also create nests in the soil, often under stones or grassy areas. These nesting ants shelter the ants and aerate the soil as they build.
Farmers and gardeners use ladybugs for pest control
Ekpolok · 8 months ago
Since the ladybug feeds on aphids and other plant-feeding insect types, many farmers try to incorporate them on their land as pest control. As stated earlier, a ladybug can consume as many as 5000 insect types in its lifetime. This natural diet serves many farm and garden areas since they serve as predators of pests that damage plants.

Scientific name: Arctia caja.
The attractive coloration and patterns on the hindwings of this moth make it cute and appealing. The garden tiger is a pretty colorful moth found in North America and Eurasia.

It has white with attractive black markings on its forewings and orange with many black spots on its hindwings. Their colorful hindwings are warnings to predators. Garden tiger moths display their colorful hindwings when threatened. They secrete poisonous fluid from their body when a threat persists.
