The Montseny Brook Newt is native to the Montseny Massif in Northeast Spain. They primarily inhabit cold, fast-moving rivers with low nutrient levels, indicating they are strictly aquatic in nature. It was distinctively recognized as its own species, separate from the Pyrenean brook salamander, in 2005.
Displaying a chocolate-colored back, this species has a flattened head, and its body is oval-shaped with minimal dorsoventral compression. If they feel threatened, these newts secret a white, sticky, highly odorous substance, likely intended to deter predators.
Regrettably, the Montseny Brook newt is critically endangered, with fewer than 1,500 in the wild. Their survival is primarily challenged by the desiccation of their mountain stream habitats.

The greater coucal or crow pheasant (Centropus sinensis), is a large non-parasitic member of the cuckoo order of birds, the Cuculiformes. A widespread resident in the Indian Subcontinent and Southeast Asia, it is divided into several subspecies, some being treated as full species. They are large, crow-like with a long tail and coppery brown wings and found in a wide range of habitats from jungle to cultivation and urban gardens. They are weak fliers, and are often seen clambering about in vegetation or walking on the ground as they forage for insects, eggs and nestlings of other birds. They have a familiar deep resonant call which is associated with omens in many parts of its range.

Sailing along the BC coast is one of the coolest ways to experience the area, and if it’s in your budget, its also possible to experience the rainforest by flying above it. March 29th has come and gone – the first milestone in the roadmap out of lockdown, you can now meet 5 other people or another household outdoors. Making the most of the warm weather, (snow is forecast next week!?), my daughters and I sat with my elderly parents in their garden, the first time I have seen them, not behind glass for many weeks, and another step closer to being able to share a hug. My mum, never one for holding back, commented on my ‘lockdown locks’, and how I must be looking forward to the opening of hairdressers so my mane could be coiffured by a professional as opposed to me coaxing it into any style that doesn’t look like I have been pulled ‘through a hedge backwards’. Well, this got me thinking about my appearance, if I’m really honest as a busy working mum of two teens, it’s not a subject that even at the best of times, I give a lot of thought to, but during the last year, it’s fair to say I may have gone a little feral.
