Leona’s Little Blue (Philotiella leona)

Leona’s little blue butterfly is one of the rarest butterflies in the world. It is a small butterfly with a 0.75-inch wing width. Leona’s Little Blue is native to Klamath County, Oregon, United States, and is the only butterfly endemic to Oregon. You can only find it in a specific area in Oregon: six square miles of ash-pumice habitat southeast of Crater Lake.

The Palos Verdes blue butterfly is a subspecies of silvery blue butterfly. It is one of the rarest butterflies native to the Palos Verdes Peninsula in Los Angeles County, California. The IUCN listed it as endangered in 1980 because of habitat destruction, climate change, and non-native plant invasion.

Miami Blue (Cyclargus thomasi bethunebakeri)

Miami Blue is a rare butterfly native to Florida, particularly the Key West and Great White Heron National Wildlife Refuges in the Florida Keys. It is one of the most endangered butterflies in the United States.

The mosaic of important habitats that are found within the Everglades National Park supports a rich assemblage of flora and fauna that are unique to the region and are found nowhere else on Earth. Due to its location at the interface of the temperate region of North America and the tropical region of the Caribbean, the Everglades National Park hosts floral species from both the biomes. The park serves as an important habitat for a wide variety of floral species like wildflowers, broad-leafed aquatic plants, muhly grass, succulents, various scrub bushes like saw palmetto, poisonwood, wild coffee, and white indigo berry; trees such as southern live oaks, gumbo-limbo, wild tamarind, slash pines, and conifers; and epiphytes like bromeliads, orchids, ferns, and Spanish moss. Mangroves like red mangroves, black mangroves, and white mangroves are found in the Everglades National Park.

Blue roses

Like black roses, blue roses do not grow naturally, as roses lack the gene or pigmentation to produce blue. Even science hasn’t made a truly blue rose, with collaborative research by an Australian company, Florigene, and a Japanese company, Suntory, falling short of their genetic engineering goal. While the genetically modified rose was sold and described as blue, they were closer to lavender or mauve.
